The Diversity of Soccer Culture: Modern Soccer History

This is the last blog to post in Media 10 this semester. I talked and introduced many soccer culture in the blog and very happy to share with you. Today, I will introduce the history of modern soccer.

Modern soccer originate from the United Kingdom in the 11th century as a egend. In the 12th century, the UK has their first soccer match. The match is for entertainment, held on twice a year and always between two cities. But the soccer match which is not seemed like what we see now. At that time, people played soccer just rush to catch the ball and fight together in order to kick the ball to city center because it will be the winner which team kick the ball to the center firstly. So, people always kick the ball into someone house, but the game is continue, they rush into the house and break all the things in the house. That why many people hate soccer at that time. However, in 1848, the first official rule is created which called "Cambridge rules". From then on, people played soccer in a new way. Also, the oldest soccer club in the world is set up in a small city in the UK called Nottinghamshire in 1862. At the same time, people unify the rules for soccer and it is call "the birth of soccer" by people. The second session of the Olympic Games in 1900, soccer is listed as official competition. And in 1904, FIFA (Federation International de Football Association) is set up in Paris. A new soccer era is opened.

The Diversity of Soccer Culture: Some Rules of Soccer

Today I will talk about some rules in soccer match. Rule is a very important thing or factor in sports competition. In other words, without rule, sports can't be played well and can't be fair. So, I will introduce some rules about soccer.

The basically number of player for each team is 11, can't be added or reduced at the beginning of the match. Each player as a character in the match. How to get a point? In soccer, if a player shoot (anyway) the ball over the line of opposite gate, it will get one point which mean have a goal. Furthermore, sometimes a team attack to another team. They are called stop by referee because of offside. The meaning of offside is a little bit complex, so I use a professional explaining. A player must be offside the moment the ball is played by a teammate. And to be called offside, the player must also be involved in an "active play" by gaining an advantage by being offside, or interfere with a play, or an opponent. To be offsides, the player must also be on the opponent's half of the soccer field, being closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the next-to-last defender (the goalkeeper is usually the last defender). Offside will not be called if an offside player is not active in the play (FIFA's Laws of the Game: The 17 Rules of Soccer). In addition, if a player fouls in the match, he will has penalty from referee. The degree of penalty will be depended on how the player fouls . It divide to just call stop and give the fouled team start to continue, referee verbal warnings, referee gives yellow card and referee gives red card. If a player gets red card in the match, he will be sent off. Also, If a player gets twice yellow card, he will still be sent off because two yellow cards as the same as red card.

The Diversity of Soccer Culture: Soccer Formations

Last week I took about the position on soccer team. There are almost 20 different positions which have different functions and specific characteristics. Today, I will talk about how the positions standing to create different soccer formations.

It's interesting to research soccer formation because there are all kinds of different and flexible formations in different occasions, just depending your opponent and the match how is going. Formations are the way a soccer team lines up its defense, midfield, and forward line at the beginning of the match. Dividing soccer formation in three types, there are offensive, controlling and defensive. For example, an offensive formation tend to attack, so it always put less defender and more forward such as 4-3-3, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2. In contrast, a defensive formation more focus on defend, so it will be more defenders on the formation like 5-4-1, 5-2-2-1 and 4-5-1. The last type is controlling formation which good at attack and defend balanced. These formations are useful because it is balance and flexible. Also easier to control the match so it is popular too. The typical formations for control are 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-2-1-2.
